He Leaked the Secrets of a Southeast Asian Scam Compound. Then He Had to Get Out Alive
A source trapped inside an industrial-scale scamming operation contacted me, determined to expose his captors' crimes--and then escape. It was a perfect June evening in New York when I received my first email from the source who would ask me to call him Red Bull. He was writing from hell, 8,000 miles away. A summer shower had left a rainbow over my Brooklyn neighborhood, and my two children were playing in a kiddie pool on the roof of our apartment building. Now the sun was setting, while I--in typical 21st-century parenting fashion, forgive me--compulsively scrolled through every app on my phone. The message had no subject line and came from an address on the encrypted email service Proton Mail: "vaultwhistle@proton.me." I'm currently working inside a major crypto romance scam operation based in the Golden Triangle," it began. "I am a computer engineer being forced to work here under a contract." "I've collected internal evidence of how the scam works--step by step," the message ...

Is Machine Learning The Key To Unlocking Gen Z Engagement? A Discussion With Jonathan Jadali Of Ascend
The jury is still out on what makes Gen Z'ers tick, but while the research is still ongoing there is much evidence to suggest that a marketing strategy utilizing machine learning is exponentially more effective with the next generation. One thing is abundantly clear to every marketer worth his salt; Gen Z customers are "ninja-level" efficient at swatting away regular ads and pop-ups. They are strongly immune to hard sales and obvious sales content. Despite all the difficulties that marketers are facing in reaching a wide Gen Z audience, Jonathan Jadali, CEO and Founder at Ascend Agency has found great success in leading Gen Z-focused startups to victory in this marketing struggle. So what makes the typical Gen Z customer tick and how can businesses and startups build a brand that is appealing to them, utilizing cutting edge technologies?
Driverless cars could offer governments new forms of control
Imagine a state-of-the-art driverless car zipping along a road with a disabled, 90-year-old passenger. The car must make a decision: drive into the mother and child and kill them, or swerve into a wall and kill the passenger. This is a variation of the trolley problem, a thought experiment which dominates academic and popular thinking about the ethics of driverless cars. The problem is that such debates not only dismiss the complexity of the system in which driverless cars will exist, but are also moral red herrings. The real ethical issues lie in the politics and power concerns with driverless cars.

Formula 1 Uses Machine Learning To Deliver In-Race Predictions To Fans
The flagman waves the chequered flag as Red Bull's Dutch driver Max Verstappen crosses the finish of the Austrian Formula One Grand Prix in Spielberg, central Austria, on July 1, 2018. Formula 1 plans to use cloud technology and machine learning to deliver more engaging statistic and even predictions to fans watching races on television and on its digital platforms. Cloud giant Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been signed up as an official technology partner, with its technology used to crunch the data and deliver it in a more meaningful way to fans and commentators. Each Formula 1 car produces huge amounts of data that the teams use to optimise their strategies and it is this database that Liberty Media believes can be turned into something valuable for the audience. After all, this is a sport that claims to have been'doing' big data since before the term was coined.

I Tried Shoplifting in a Store without Cashiers and Here's What Happened
Say goodbye to the glitchy self-checkout scanners in your local retail store. Grocery buying is about to get a big boost from artificial intelligence. At a prototype store in Santa Clara, California, you grab a plastic basket, fill it up as you amble down an aisle packed with all kinds of things--Doritos, hand soap, Coke, and so on--then walk to a tablet computer near the door. The tablet shows a list of everything that's in your basket and how much you owe; you pay, and you leave. This store is actually the demonstration space of a startup called Standard Cognition, which is using a network of cameras and machine vision and deep-learning techniques to create an autonomous checkout experience. Standard Cognition cofounder and chief operating officer Michael Suswal says the company hopes to have it in a store--either a partner's or the company's own--in six months, most likely in the Bay Area.

XGBoost workshop and meetup talk with Tianqi Chen Data Science Los Angeles
Proof of this and also because XGBoost has an easy-to-use interface from both R and Python, XGBoost has become a favorite tool in Kaggle competitions. Besides feature engineering, cross-validation and ensembling, XGBoost is a key ingredient for achieving the highest accuracy in many data science competitions and more importantly in practical applications. We were fortunate to recently host Tianqi Chen, the main author of XGBoost in a workshop and a meetup talk in Santa Monica, California. First, we started with an advanced workshop in the afternoon for which anyone could apply to participate but there were only a dozen spots available (which got us some expert users of XGBoost, but unfortunately we had to reject some good people too, sorry). This advanced workshop had 2 sessions.
